Emerging Leaders - Guneet

Nicole Margolis – August 2023

Guneet is a Grade 11 student and has been part of CanU for seven years. She enjoys a wide variety of sports ranging from lacrosse to track, and enjoys studying subjects like math and science.

Guneet has grown up with CanU and has evolved from a soft spoken individual, to a confident and effective public speaker. Guneet recalls that her ability to confidently communicate is a product of her time spent in CanU. Guneet had the opportunity to speak at the Imagine Stories Gala in 2022 and she mentions how this event “made me even more confident”.

Mentors within the years Guneet has been involved in programming have been instrumental. She highlights Shahab as someone who remains a mentor and a friend. Seeing Shahab’s energy and excitement for storytelling allowed Guneet to break out of her shell and discover her confidence.

Beyond CanU and Guneet’s personal development, if Guneet could have one superpower, it would be the ability to provide electricity to underdeveloped areas. This superpower is influenced by her upbringing in India prior to moving to Canada. She remembers how frustrating it was when her power was sporadic.

Guneet prides herself in achievements such as making Team Manitoba for lacrosse. Moreover, CanU sponsored Guneet’s trip to nationals. She mentions how “CanU introduced me to hiking” a newfound hobby that she never realized she had the passion for. This speaks to CanU’s ability to uncover hidden interests.

As a junior mentor, Guneet recalls how her interest in working with children blossomed. She enjoys taking a role in sculpting the leaders of tomorrow. From a reserved participant, to a confident leader, Guneet uses her story to inspire to future generation. Showing tangible results of what CanU can offer a budding leader. Guneet hopes to continue building upon her community engagement, and making a lasting difference in the CanU community.
