Emerging Leaders - Manmeet

Nicole Margolis – August 2023

Manmeet is a grade nine student and has been a CanU participant for the past five years. His journey through CanU has impacted his day-to-day life as he has not only enhanced his skills as an independent person but developed a sense of community responsibility.

Manmeet has a passion for chess and has participated on his debate team for many years. His involvement in CanU has allowed him to explore different avenues when reflecting on his future career pursuits. One of Manmeet’s most significant discoveries has been his newfound appreciation for public speaking. Manmeet recalls joining CanU’s law academy which has altered his way of approaching conflict, speaking to professionals, and thinking on his feet.

CanU’s impact on Manmeet reaches far beyond programming. He mentions how the Nutrition experience allowed him to learn basic kitchen skills like cutting vegetables, using a stove, and being able to learn how to help his mom cook for his family. “Mug Cake” was noted as his favourite recipe he learned during programming.

Manmeet’s mentors played an instrumental role in the person he is today. For Manmeet, people like Mark and Tarun have allowed him to thrive through the program with ease. He recounts “they have explanations for everything and they always make me feel included”.

Outside of CanU, Manmeet serves as a cadet in squadron 117. He received the Top Cadet Award in his squadron and notes this accomplishment as one of his proudest moments. With his sights set on serving as a junior mentor, like his cousins, Manmeet hopes to provide the same guidance he received growing up as a participant through CanU “It would make me very, very happy” Manmeet exclaims.

Manmeet’s journey through CanU is a product of how life changing CanU’s programming can be. From his newfound appreciation for public speaking, learning practical skills, to becoming an inspiring leader, Manmeet hopes to continue this trend of empowerment.
