CanU Mentor

Inspire hope. Build confidence. Take action.


What You’ll Do:
As a CanU Mentor, you’ll guide, support, and participate alongside youth in Grades 5-12, helping them safely navigate their CanU experiences while introducing them to the dream of post-secondary education. You’ll work alongside fellow university students in a fun, team-driven environment, ensuring participants arrive safely and on time. Your main goal in the role is to inspire hope, confidence and action in our participating youth.

Eligibility:

  • University/college students OR high school graduates from any faculty, college, or department
  • Passionate about working with youth and supporting their learning journey

Time Commitment:

  • One evening per week for 5 weeks during a term (Fall or Winter)
  • No commitment during Fall or Winter Reading Week
  • Summer Mentoring option also available - Flexible, Day-time

Experience Coordinator

Bring your ideas to life—lead your own Learning Experience!


What You’ll Do:
Do you have an idea for an awesome hands-on learning experience? Whether it’s STEM, arts, wellness, or leadership-focused, this is your chance to create and lead a program for CanU kids! Work individually or in a team, designing a session that’s fun, interactive, and impactful.

Eligibility:

  • University/college students OR professionals passionate about education and youth development
  • Must submit a session proposal (including equipment, space, and objectives)

Time Commitment:

  • One evening per week for 5 weeks during a term (Fall or Winter)
  • Flexible for Rise+ experiences (one-time events)

Virtual Tutor

Help students succeed—anytime, anywhere!


What You’ll Do:
If you’re passionate about a subject and love helping others learn, this is the role for you! You’ll be paired with a CanU student who needs support in a specific subject, providing virtual tutoring in a way that fits your schedule.

Eligibility:

  • Comfortable tutoring a specific subject or grade level
  • Available for at least one session per week for three months

Time Commitment:

  • Flexible! You choose the schedule that works for you.

Junior Mentor

Be a role model. Make a difference.


What You’ll Do:
As a Junior Mentor, you’ll support and guide a group of Grade 5 & 6 kids each week—like a big brother or sister! You’ll participate alongside them in activities, helping them feel excited, confident, and engaged.

Eligibility:

  • High school students in Grade 11 or 12
  • Enthusiastic about working with younger kids

Time Commitment:

  • One evening per week for 5 weeks during a term (Fall or Winter)

Nutrition Facilitator

Bringing food, fun, and learning together!


What You’ll Do:
Help facilitate nutrition education and hands-on cooking with youth in Grades 5-12! You’ll teach healthy eating habits, prepare kid-friendly recipes, and make food education engaging and interactive.

Eligibility:

  • University students (preferably in Human Nutritional Sciences or a related field)
  • Passionate about nutrition, health, and youth education

Time Commitment:

  • One evening per week for 5 weeks during a term (Fall or Winter)

Meal Services Greeter and Helper

Help create a nourishing atmosphere!


What You’ll Do:
Support on-campus meal service during CanU evening programming to ensure meals are served smoothly and efficiently at designated locations. You'll ensure the station is ready to go before young participants and volunteers arrive, greet and organize the CanU participants as they arrive, and ensure a welcoming environment for all!

Eligibility:

  • Open to all - no experience necessary

Time Commitment:

  • 1-3 evenings per week for 5 weeks during a term (Fall or Winter)

  • Help to create a welcoming space for participants.
  • Volunteers are welcome to enjoy a meal with the participants and fellow volunteers!

 

Grocery Shopping Support

Bringing food, fun, and learning together!


What You’ll Do:
Support the CanU Nutrition team by helping shop for groceries needed for hands-on nutrition and cooking sessions for youth. You’ll assist in selecting and transporting ingredients from the grocery store to the University of Manitoba.

Eligibility:

  • Open to all - Preference given to volunteers with access to a vehicle for transporting groceries.

Time Commitment:

  • Approximately 2 hours on Mondays for up to 5 weeks (Fall or Winter term) - Weekly commitment is flexible and not required every week.

  • Work closely with the CanU Nutrition Team and contribute to a meaningful learning experience for kids.
