Leadership in Winnipeg Youth

Nicole Margolis – August 2023

In a world that is constantly evolving, the need of volunteerism is paramount. Winnipeg, being the small city that its citizens make it out to be, is fuelled by its dedication to youth – its future leaders. Being a leader does not require a fancy title, or a handful of scholarships. Being a leader requires willingness to lift each other up, a passion for taking action, and a commitment to learning. Whether its mentoring young individuals or volunteering for a city-wide initiative, the power of volunteerism produces a ripple effect in inspiring the importance of social service.

The spirit of volunteerism resonates in the countless volunteer organizations within Manitoba. With CanadaHelps recording over 2000 Manitoba initiatives, the idea that the heartbeat of Winnipeg circulates around its people, continues to ring true.

For CanU, volunteerism is more than just giving of one’s time. It is a bridge between generational growth, diversity, community engagement, and ultimately, personal development. When delving deeper into CanU’s vision, we pose the question “Can you?” or “Can I?” This question is not meant to be answered with a simple “yes” or “no” response. It is set up to be the foundation to return to when things seem impossible to surmount.

“Can you?” is an invitation to explore one’s potential. A simple yet reflective question that CanU often puts emphasis on. Many CanU participants highlight the importance of “saying yes”; to tackle unfamiliarity and step outside of their comfort zones. This question proposes the ability for individuals to effect change in Winnipeg.

“Can I?” embodies introspection and accountability. This question allows for people to dive into their own skills and passions reminding them that volunteerism is a two-way street. It allows for give and take; giving of your time, and taking that personal growth and development and leveraging it.

Creating a life that prioritizes community impact is one of the many reasons volunteerism is so prudent in Winnipeg. Let’s continue to foster a future of young leaders!
