Mentor Spotlight - Carmen

Carmen’s journey with CanU has served as a whirlwind of experiences. As a past mentor and current facilitator, Carmen found herself moved by the “small things”. She remembers her initial responsibilities of taking CanU participants to and from the bus, and mentions “I never did anything like that, I really wish I had something like this growing up”. Since then, Carmen’s commitment to CanU became of second nature.

CanU’s programming had a major influence on her educational and professional endeavors. In collaboration with members of the CanU team, and faculty members within the Faculty of Architecture, Carmen was asked to cultivate the CanU Architecture pilot program. Carmen recalls the challenges of that first program, “kids did not want the program to end, and that stuck with me”. The engagement within her faculty was personally rewarding and impressive to others. She reflects how CanU enhanced her resume and acted as a conversation piece in professional settings.

Carmen’s involvement with CanU has enhanced her leadership skills and confidence. As the spearhead of the architecture program, she recruited her own volunteers. Carmen mentions how “it is not hard to sell CanU”. As a past recipient of the CanU B. History Award, Carmen recalls the feelings of being seen and valued.

Carmen envisions a future where CanU continues to be a priority. As she nears the end of her time in architecture, she hopes to own a design practice, studio, or business.
