In a landmark decision that promises to reshape the educational landscape in Manitoba, the provincial government has launched a Universal School Nutrition Program, ensuring that every student, regardless of their background, has access to a nutritious meal or snack during their school day. This bold initiative recognizes a fundamental truth: students cannot succeed in the classroom on an empty stomach. With $30 million allocated to the program in Budget 2024, the government is making a powerful investment in the future of Manitoba’s youth.
“Kids can’t learn on an empty stomach”
Premier Wab Kinew’s statement, “Kids can’t learn on an empty stomach,” couldn’t be more accurate. Food security is a crucial factor in a child’s ability to concentrate, engage, and ultimately succeed in school. Children who receive consistent access to balanced, healthy meals are more likely to excel academically, experience fewer behavioural issues, and grow up with better physical and mental health. This initiative is more than just a school program—it’s a lifeline for families, communities, and most importantly, the future of Manitoba.
At CanU Canada, nutrition has always been a core pillar of our mission. Like the Universal School Nutrition Program, CanU recognizes that providing nutritious meals to youth is key to unlocking their full potential. We strive to offer every CanU Participants a nutritious meal while on-campus, giving them the energy and focus to participate fully in their Learning Experiences. We believe that proper nutrition in-school and after-school is critical in our mission to inspire Participants.
Simply put, we believe hope and hunger cannot coexist.
Why is nutrition such a vital aspect of CanU’s approach? Simply put, we believe hope and hunger cannot coexist. Research consistently shows that hunger can severely affect cognitive development and academic performance. Children who experience hunger often struggle with concentration, memory, and problem-solving. A child who is well-fed, however, is more likely to be an active learner—alert, attentive, and ready to engage with the world around them.
By providing nutritious meals, we’re not just filling stomachs; we’re feeding hope, confidence, and the opportunity for action. When a child feels secure about their next meal, their mind can shift from survival to thriving. That’s when real learning happens. That’s when children begin to see the world not as a place full of obstacles, but one brimming with possibilities waiting to be explored.
The Universal School Nutrition Program aligns perfectly with CanU’s vision of empowering youth. The program’s commitment to ensuring that all students, especially those in communities with high socio-economic need, have access to nutritious meals mirrors our own dedication to levelling the playing field for Winnipeg’s youth. Just as Premier Kinew and Minister Nello Altomare have pointed out, food security is a stepping stone to educational success—and CanU sees this every day in the young people we serve.
In the spirit of this shared mission, we celebrate the provincial government’s move to support all schools across Manitoba. The ripple effect will be felt not only in classrooms but in the broader community as well. With community partners like the Child Nutrition Council of Manitoba joining forces, we’re building a stronger, healthier future for our province.
As Manitoba leads the way in school nutrition, CanU remains committed to providing youth with the support they need to reach their full potential. Through mentorship, hands-on learning experiences, and, yes, nutritious meals, we ensure every child can grow, learn, and lead with confidence.
In a world where so many children face obstacles beyond their control, it is our responsibility to create environments where they can thrive. The Universal School Nutrition Program and CanU’s initiatives together make it possible for more children to succeed—no matter their background, neighbourhood, or circumstances. With food in their bellies, hope in their hearts, and opportunities in their hands, our children can achieve anything.
Let’s continue to see possibilities and seize opportunities—one nutritious meal at a time.
